2021 National Student Audition (NSA)
Before entering students, please be read the
Complete rules and repertoire guidelines. (click on this link)
Eligibility: any student of a current NATS member is eligible - whether they have participated in their chapter audition or not. Students may enter both Classical and Music Theater categories appropriate for their age and years of study. Advanced music theater singers are encouraged to consider the National Music Theater Competition (NMTC)
PLEASE NOTE: the $75 registration fee mentioned on NATS.ORG is for the NATIONAL Preliminary Round. Only students advancing from our regional prelim and choosing to enter will pay that fee.
Registration: access to online registration and video link upload is available via www.nats.org Log in and go to the MEMBER HOME page. Scroll down to NATS AUDITIONS REGISTRATION to find the link to the 2020 North Central NSA Preliminary Round. Follow the instructions and steps there to register your students and pay your fees.
Adjudication: all teachers entering students are expected to adjudicate a category in which they do not have students. Adjudication, which includes reviewing the submitted videos, typing comments and giving each singer a score, is completed entirely online. You will receive your assignment and instructions after all submissions have been reviewed - late February.
Proper preparation of the VIDEOS for NSA submission is critical -- Incorrectly produced videos risk disqualification. Please do not begin the process until you have carefully read the Video
Recording Instructions.
If you use your Studio YouTube Channel to upload student videos, please create a separate channel
for the NSA which gives no public indication of your studio name.
This will enable completely impartial adjudication.
If your student is using music purchased online (musicnotes, sheetmusicplus, etc) or is using music in public domain obtained online, PLEASE follow the instructions below:
For music purchased and downloaded: scan either the receipt from the purchase OR the first page of the downloaded material. Make sure that the title, date, and the name of the purchaser are clearly visible. Email it to Kathy Otterson as an attachment and indicate the name(s) of the singer(s).
For IMSLP and other public domain sites: take a screen shot (like the one attached here) of the page that shows the title and the download info about the piece, and send it as an attachment, again, with the singer's name(s) listed.

Wondering where your registration fee $$ goes? The $25 registration fee is refunded to anyone who advances to the National Preliminary Round to offset the $75 registration fee. Singers advancing to the Semi- and Final rounds are offered a generous stipend to assist with travel costs. The rest of the monies stay in our Regional fund, to be used as needed for regional activities.
I am available and very happy to assist you in any way --
please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about any aspect of the process.
